Surgery for Forefoot Conditions
There are many different conditions that can inflict pain and damage to the forefoot. These injuries and conditions do not always respond to conservative methods of treatment such as rest, stretching, orthotics or casting. Sometimes these advanced foot issues require surgery for treatment. Each type of injury or condition requires a surgery specific to its type and cause. Here are some of the most common forefoot problems and some basic information about the surgeries that could relieve them.
Aggravated nerves can cause a neuroma. This means that a section of a nerve is enlarged. These neuromas normally occur between the third and fourth toe of the foot. Commonly, the neuroma swells and cause a lot of pain when an individual tries to stand and put weight on the foot. If a patient chooses to undergo surgery, the affected nerve will be permanently numbed so that the pain no longer exists.
This common foot abnormality causes growth of the bone and its surrounding tissue on the joint of the big toe. It is usually seen on the outer side of the big toe. This disorder is known to be passed down in families. A podiatrist will take an x-ray of your foot and decide if surgery is the best option to help relieve the pain of your bunion. Sometimes surgery is the best option, while other times a noninvasive method may be better.
Hammertoes look as if they have been struck by a hammer and are bunched and angled. Due to the deformity, the toes begin to buckle and pain spreads throughout the foot and the toes. Most patients who suffer from this have a hard time staying mobile. Through surgery, a podiatrist can straighten the toes to help relieve pain and allow for proper foot wear and mobility.
Bone Spurs
A bone spur is an overgrowth of bone due to shock or compression. It can limit the range of motion of a joint. Spurs can sometimes be found under the toenail plate. They are known to be very painful. Surgical treatment is based on the size and the location of the spur. Your podiatrist or foot surgeon will recommend the best course of action based on your medical history and the development of your bone spur.
