Beach Foot & Ankle Health Care Tips

Podiatrist in New Jersey - beach foot health care

There’s nothing quite like a sunny day at the beach. The sound of the waves, the feel of the sand between your toes, and the chance to unwind. But while beach trips are great for the soul, they can sometimes take a toll on your feet. As podiatrists, we often see a seasonal spike in foot problems during the warmer months, many of which can be prevented with just a little extra care and awareness.

Whether you’re strolling along the shoreline, jumping into a game of beach volleyball, or just lounging under an umbrella, your feet deserve attention, too. Here’s how to make the most of your beach days while keeping your foot health in top shape.

Sand Isn’t Always Soft: Protect Your Soles

Walking barefoot on sand can feel therapeutic and even provide a gentle exfoliation and balance workout. In fact, studies in recent years have noted that walking on uneven terrain, like sand, can activate foot and ankle stabilizer muscles in a healthy way. Too much barefoot walking for those with plantar fasciitis, flat feet, or diabetic neuropathy can lead to pain or injury.

Hot sand, sharp shells, and hidden debris can also pose risks. Bring supportive sandals or water shoes that protect your feet while still letting them breathe. If you plan to walk long distances on the beach, consider a pair of sport sandals with arch support to prevent strain.

Warm-Up Before You Wander

If your beach adventure includes long walks, beach games, or water sports, be sure to warm up your muscles first. Just like any physical activity, stretching your calves, ankles, and toes helps prevent cramping and fatigue. Recent sports medicine guidelines continue to emphasize the importance of dynamic warm-ups, especially for individuals over 40 or those with a history of foot or ankle injuries.

A simple 5-minute stretch before hitting the sand can go a long way in keeping your beach outing pain-free.

Sunscreen for Your Feet? Absolutely!

Most people don’t think to apply sunscreen to the tops of their feet, but the skin there is just as vulnerable to sunburn and UV damage. In fact, skin cancers like melanoma can develop on feet. According to recent data from the American Podiatric Medical Association, melanoma on the foot is often diagnosed later, making prevention all the more important.

So before you lay out your towel, make sure to apply (and reapply) a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to your feet tops, soles, and between your toes.

Watch Out for Beachside Bumps and Bruises

Beach activities can lead to minor injuries like stubbed toes, blisters from flip-flops, or even cuts from stepping on unseen objects. For people with diabetes or compromised circulation, even small wounds can lead to bigger issues. It’s smart to carry a small beach-friendly first aid kit with antiseptic wipes, bandages, and a spare pair of clean socks or sandals.
